immature Great Black Hawk
This is a young GBH on a sojourn to Portland, Maine’s Deering Oaks Park, all the way from its native South America. Deering Oaks is comprised of a nearly pure stand of veteran Northern Red Oaks, which yields an abundance of acorns yearly. This supports a large population of Gray Squirrels. That's why the hawk has been overnighting here for about a month now (beginning mid-November 2018). It is subsisting on Gray Squirrels and takes one whenever it wants to.
