Holiday Inn, Riverside St., Portland, Maine. Somebody cut these woody vines about 8 years ago. I wonder who it was.

Based on everything I have seen, unless the Asiatic Bittersweet here is eradicated (permanently) it is just a matter of time before it kills these big, beautiful, native trees. As I recall, there are two very large Eastern White Pines and a young (about 8”-10” diameter) Northern Red Oak here.

Commercial land owners seem to be unaware of, or unconcerned with, the value of native trees on their commercial property. These trees add value to the property. Ok, maybe that value has never been assessed, but consider what the property looks like with these healthy trees as opposed to no trees, especially if they are maintained and valued. Maintaining trees is not expensive. Removing them is very expensive.

If they really were paying attention they would realize that it is going to cost a lot of money to fell and remove these trees when they die. If the ABS vine is left to live its life history, the premature death of these trees seems certain.
