First attempt at flight

First attempt at flight

The youngster turned into the first north winds of Autumn and waited for the strongest gusts. Then it flapped and ran as hard as it could up the lake, probably for almost 200 yards. It failed, over and over, on successive, windy days in that last week of September. But when I returned to the lake on October 2, there were no loons. The youngster had made its maiden flight and they headed for the ocean.
